Passport photos are an essential part of travel documentation. They are required for various purposes, including visa applications, travel permits, and identification documents. Traditional passport photos are taken in a studio with a professional camera, printed on photo paper, and cut to size. However, digital passport photos have become increasingly popular due to their convenience and accessibility.

What are digital passport photos?

Digital passport photos are photos that are taken using a digital camera or smartphone and stored in digital format. They are usually saved as JPEG or PNG files, which can be easily shared via email or online platforms. Unlike traditional passport photos, digital photos do not require printing, cutting, or mounting. They can be directly uploaded to online visa applications or printed using a home printer.

Why are digital passport photos useful?

Digital passport photos offer several advantages over traditional photos. Firstly, they are more convenient and accessible. You can take a digital passport photo anytime, anywhere, using a smartphone or digital camera. This means you don't have to visit a professional studio or wait in line to get your photo taken. Secondly, digital passport photos are cheaper than traditional photos. You don't have to pay for printing, cutting, or mounting. This makes them an affordable option for frequent travelers or those on a tight budget. Thirdly, digital passport photos are more environmentally friendly. They don't require any physical materials or resources, such as photo paper or chemicals, which can harm the environment.

How to get digital passport photos?

Getting digital passport photos is easy and straightforward. There are several ways to do it. Firstly, you can take a digital passport photo using your smartphone or digital camera. Make sure to follow the guidelines for passport photos, which include a plain white or light-colored background, no shadows on the face, and a neutral facial expression. Once you have taken the photo, you can save it as a JPEG or PNG file. Secondly, you can use an online passport photo service, such as https://www.idphotodiy.com/. The service allows you to upload a digital photo and automatically adjust it to meet the requirements for passport photos. It also provides a digital file that you can use for online visa applications. Lastly, you can visit a local photo printing shop and ask for a digital passport photo. They will take a photo of you using a digital camera and save it as a digital file.

Digital passport photos are a convenient, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional passport photos. They offer several advantages, including accessibility, affordability, and environmental sustainability. Getting a digital passport photo is easy and can be done using a smartphone, online service, or local photo printing shop. So next time you need a passport photo, consider going digital!

How to take passport photo in 5 steps?

Step 1: Use a digital camera or a smartphone to take a photo

Find someone to take the photo for you and selfie photo is not acceptable for passport photo application. If you have a tripod, use it. A tripod will make it easier to keep the camera steady and level. The distance of the person to the camera should be around 1 meter.

Step 2: Find a venue with good lighting

When taking photo, you should face the light, such as a nice bright window or the door. This can provide even lighting to avoid shadows on the face and background. The face must be evenly lit. There should be no shadows and glares on the face.

Note: No need to worry about the background as our online passport photo generator will automatically remove or change the background for you.

Step 3: Wear properly for your passport photo

Do not wear uniforms. Wear regular street clothes in your photo.

Do not wear eyeglasses. If you wear glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses, take them off for your passport photo.

Your face must still be fully visible.  Don’t let your hair drape over your face and obscure your eyes. If you have very long bangs that cover your eyebrows, you should pin them back with bobby pins. It’s best if your ears show, as well, but that won’t cause your photo to be rejected.

No hats are allowed in passport photos unless it is religious headgear such as a headscarf or yarmulke that you wear every day.

Step 4: Pose for a passport

Look straight towards the camera with face straight on. Head should not be tilted or rotated.

Both ears showing or both edges of the face visible if hair covers the ears.

Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

Position the camera in the same height as the head.

Step 5: Have a neutral facial expression

You can smile in your passport photos, but the government prefers that you have a neutral facial expression.

Smiling or having your mouth open is usually not acceptable, especially under the new international passport rules.
