How it works

1. Take a picture

Take several photos with a camera or smartphone. No need to worry about the background as our system will remove or change the background for you.

2. Crop the photo

Crop your photo to the correct ID or passport size photo. Over 50 templates available!

3. Download and print

Detailed requirements

Your photo must meet these requirements whether it is digital or paper. It needs to be taken within the last 6 months.

Photo requirements

  • No background shadow. Stand half a metre away from the background so you don't get a shadow.  
  • Have a gap around the head. It helps if you can show part of the shoulders and have space above the head. 
  • Eyes in full view. You can wear glasses but the rims cannot hide part of the eyes. 
  • No glare. If your glasses create a glare, take them off. 
  • Neutral expression. No smiling. 
  • Face in full view. Nothing (like a hat, hood, scarf) should hide any part of the face. 

Framing the photo

Refer to Figure 1 (below) for help with correct framing of the subject. Use values for A, B, C and D to correctly position the head. Frame the photo so that:

  • The subject is centred with the midpoints of the mouth and nose lying on an imaginary vertical centreline.
  • The length of the head is equal to A
  • The width of the head is equal to B
  • The eyes are positioned between points C and D
  • Ensure there is a clear gap (visible background) around the entire head, including the hair and/or ears.

Digital photos

You need:

  • file type - .JPG or .JPEG

  • file size - between 250 KB to 10 M

  • aspect ratio  - 4:3

  • pixels - no less than 1200 wide by 900 high or no greater than 6000 wide by 4500 high (show diagrams)

Steps to Create Your Own Passport / Visa Photos

  • Select the country and the photo type.
  • Upload a photo. Once the photo is uploaded, the Crop page opens.
  • On the Crop page, you can cut the image using the crop frame.
  • When you have completed the cropping, click on the Next button.
  • On the enhancement page, select the best photo with bright background and not overexposed, then click the Next button.
  • Download the printable image from the Download page.

How to take a picture for passport photo at home

  • Equipment: Use a digital camera or the back camera of your smartphone to take high quality photos.
  • Background: Take the photo in front of a plain background such as white wall or screen. Make sure that there are no other objects in the background.
  • Lighting: Make sure there are no shadows on your face or on the background. Adjust the distance to the wall to remove shadows on the background. Face the light source such as a window to remove shadows on the face. You can use additional light source to get even lighting on the face.
  • Facial features: Have a neutral facial expression. Look straight to the camera. Shown full face. Eyebrows should not be covered by hair. Eyes open. Mouth closed. Slight smile is acceptable.
  • Position the camera in the same height as the head.
  • Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

How to print your passport photos

There are three ways you can print your passport photos:

  1. You can print your passport photo at home using a color printer.
  2. Save the photo to a thumb drive and print it at any photo printing shops like Costco, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart.
  3. Use online photo printing services such as Snapfish and Shutterfly.
